Why 21 is forced.
Thirty films, 29:36 in all. The whole chain is also one film, the first row below. Every film’s lines are on this page as text, in order: read it with nothing playing and you have the whole of it.
Open a row and its film loads. A closed row fetches nothing.
The thirty films in order, in one sitting.
The thirty films of this chain, in order, as one film.

There is a way to catch a number that was picked because it fits. Ask it three questions.
Someone says a number was chosen because it fits.
There is a way to check. Three questions.
Where did it come from?
Could it have been another one?
Does it carry anything beyond the thing it was picked to hit?
A chosen number fails all three.
This one is fixed by premises that name no measurement.
It cannot move without a named switch firing.
And it carries three measurements, not one.
Ask the three questions of anything.
One record exists.

Six ways to read one grain. Try adding a seventh and watch what it costs you.
One grain lands.
There are six ways to read it.
Mass. Gravity. Light. Resistance. Grip. Time.
Now try to add a seventh.
It would need a fifth condition.
Or a second freedom. Or a fourth dimension of space.
None of the three is available.
So the count is six, and the switch is on the wall.
Find a seventh reading of the grain and the number moves.
That is not a boast. It is an invitation.
One record exists.
Where it comes from: /why-21-is-forced/ · “The count, step by step” — the six readings, from the angle of what a seventh would cost
One thing held in three directions is three holds, not one.
Hold something between your fingers.
You hold it left and right. Up and down. Back and front.
That is three holds, not one.
Now: six readings of one grain.
Each of them held through each of the three.
Six times three. Eighteen.
One coupling for each face, in each direction.
Eighteen is not a guess. It is a count.
Change that rule and the count changes with it.
The switch that says so is on the wall, live.
One record exists.

Writing something down is never just writing it. It is writing it somewhere.
Write one word down.
You did two things.
You wrote it, and you put it somewhere.
Somewhere is an address. Three directions.
The now couples to the page, not to the pen.
Not to the six readings — the eighteen already count those.
Three couplings of the now. One for each direction.
Eighteen held. Three written. Twenty-one.
Every step of that is on one page, with the switch that ends it.
One record exists.
Where it comes from: /why-21-is-forced/ · “Three written”
If the now also wrote into time, the number would be twenty-two. It doesn’t, and gravity says so.
Twenty-two is the obvious objection.
Three directions, plus time. Why not four?
Because time is not a direction you write into.
Time is what the hold leaves behind.
You write into a place. Time is the record of it.
Put the coupling in anyway and watch.
Gravity then demands a factor of 179.
The work’s own factor is about 1.3.
Twenty-two is not a near miss. It is a different universe.
And the switch is named: show the writing needs time, and the count moves.
One record exists.
Where it comes from: /why-21-is-forced/ · “Not twenty, not twenty-two”
Twenty nearly works. It passes one test out of three — and it is the forgiving one.
Be fair to twenty.
The share of the universe you can see is about 4.885 per cent.
One part in twenty is five per cent. That is close.
One part in twenty-one is 4.76. Also close.
On that test alone, twenty is the better fit.
So why not twenty?
Gravity.
At twenty, gravity demands a factor of about 0.0096.
The work’s own factor is about 1.3.
The forgiving test forgives. The wall does not.

The number sits in an exponent. One step away and gravity is wrong by a factor of 137.
Most numbers have room to be a bit wrong.
This one sits in an exponent.
An exponent does not do “a bit wrong”.
One step either way, and gravity is off by a factor of 137.
Not 137 per cent. A factor of 137.
That is the wall.
Twenty goes through the wall. Twenty-two goes through the wall.
Every integer from 14 to 28 goes through it but one.
The number was not placed there. It was counted to there.

Where it comes from: /method/ · “Why only twenty-one works” — gravity sits in an exponent
The same number, in three completely different kinds of maths, and it lands in all three.
Twenty-one turns up three times.
Inside a proton, it is a sum. 1836.
In gravity, it is an exponent.
In the sky, it is one part in twenty-one.
A sum. A power. A fraction.
Three different shapes of maths.
A number fitted to one of them has no reason to satisfy the other two.
This one satisfies three.
It is evidence. It is not yet final proof.

Where it comes from: /method/ · “Then the physics, from the floor”
You don’t get to just prefer a different number. You have to say where it came from.
Say you don’t like twenty-one.
Fine. Pick another one.
Now say where it came from.
Eighteen needs five readings instead of six.
Twenty-eight needs a fourth dimension of space.
Every other number costs you a step of the chain.
And every one of those steps has a switch on it.
So the number was never free to move.
That is the whole answer to “you picked it because it fits”.

By the time the number arrives, physics has not entered the conversation.
Here is the part people skip.
One record exists. Four conditions. Six readings. Three dimensions. Read now.
Twenty-one.
Now look at what was used to get there.
No mass was weighed.
No constant was looked up.
Physics had not entered the conversation.
The number is a count, not a measurement.
Everything after it is that count meeting the world.

The measurements were never the point. They were what fell out.
A target is a thing you aim at.
Aim at a measurement and you will hit it. Anyone can.
“Measurements were never the target.”
“There never was a target.”
The job was the logic of one record exists.
The physics fell out of it.
That is why the misses are on the wall too.
You cannot miss a target you were never aiming at.
You can only find out your logic was wrong.
The logic is the point. The physics gives it weight.
The ethic is where it lands.

The whole thing runs on one measured number.
Every picture of the world needs numbers fed into it.
Most need a great many.
This one takes one.
Grip. The fine-structure constant.
Out of it: the weight of a proton. Gravity. The age of the universe.
One input. No dials.
A dial is how a wrong idea survives contact with the world.
Take the dials away and the idea has to be right, or dead.

Most of these numbers were measured long before the work existed. So was Mercury’s orbit.
Someone will say: those numbers already existed.
They did.
So did Mercury’s orbit, long before Einstein.
When a measurement was taken says nothing about how a number was reached.
How it was reached is on the page, step by step.
Read the steps. It is the only honest way to judge it.

One number in this work arrived before its reason did. The work says so, with a date on it.
Inside the proton’s correction there is a sixteen.
Its value was pinned by the measurement before its structure was written.
That is the thing every honest worker dreads writing down.
So it was written down, dated, in public, with the switch beside it.
It was paid on the sixth of September.
Four conditions of a record, held in three dimensions, over time.

There is a list of what this work still owes — written by the work, about itself.
A kill switch names how a claim could die.
A debt is a different animal. A debt is work still owed.
Five are outstanding, and each names where it is owed.
The one measured number is not one of them.
The pupil cannot see the pupil.
It is the one thing the record cannot read from inside itself.
The five are on the wall, beside everything else.
None of them is buried in a footnote.
A work that owes itself nothing has not looked hard enough.

Every claim here is published with the sentence that would end it.
A caveat says: this might be wrong.
A disclaimer says: don’t blame me.
A kill switch says something else entirely.
It names the exact finding that would end the claim.
And where you would have to look to find it.
If it is found, the claim is not amended.
It dies, and the death is shown.
Six hundred and four of them are published.

Ask anyone who tells you something big:
what would show you that you are wrong?
If there is no answer, listen to what just happened.
A claim that cannot die is not strong. It is empty.
It cost nothing, so it says nothing.
Everything here is written the other way round.
Every claim carries the condition under which it dies.
Two of them already have.
That is not a weakness in the work. It is the point of it.

Then hanging it on the front of the building.
Six hundred and four conditions.
Five hundred and eighty-four still standing, exposed.
Twenty are settled, one way or another.
Two have already fired.

On the second of August, one of their own predictions failed. They published it the same day.
A prediction was made about the weight of a neutron.
Then it was put against the measurement.
It failed. By 7.24 sigma.
That is not a near miss. That is a death.
It was published the same day.
By the work. About the work.
Nobody outside had asked.
It is still on the page, exactly as it was written.

The hardest sentence to write about your own work: no repair is offered.
When a formula misses, you can usually patch it.
Add a term. Nudge a number.
So they worked out what the patch would have to be.
It would have to be negative.
Every term in that formula is positive.
So no patch was offered. It was written down like that.
“No repair offered.”
Anything else would have been a dial.
Later, a different limb of the logic landed, and landed well.
It was frozen beside the corpse. Never in its place.

The second prediction that died was killed by the work itself, a month later.
The second corpse is stranger than the first.
A rate of expansion was registered. 74.3.
Then the same logic, carried further, produced a different one. 67.45.
The later number killed the earlier one.
5.7 sigma, on the width that had been registered.
Nobody made them announce that.
And there is a twist they published against themselves.
The registered bar had been too narrow.
On an honest bar the old row would have survived.
A fired switch is not repaired. It stands as it fell.

The rule for a dead prediction here: it is never moved, and nothing takes its place.
There is a rule for what happens when something here dies.
It is shown. Never repaired. Never deleted.
If a better version is found later, it does not move in.
It is frozen beside the corpse, never in its place.
That is why the page is a scoreboard and not a showcase.
A list of only the survivors would be a lie about the work.
And it would destroy the exact thing the freezing was for.
You are allowed to see everything that failed.

One thing was found missing in the logic, and three unrelated fields moved toward measurement.
The neutron row died because the logic had priced something as free.
Holding costs. It had not been charged for.
So the price was put in — in the logic, not in the numbers.
The neutron landed at minus 0.005 sigma.
Then the same missing price was carried outward.
Gravity moved from its first reading to minus 0.036 per cent.
And the expansion rate landed a tenth of a sigma from the sky.
One repair. Three fields. No new dial anywhere.
That is what a structure does, and a fit cannot.

Fitting has a signature. Everything lands. Nothing is ever wrong.
Here is how you spot a fit.
Everything lands. Nothing is ever wrong.
Every error sits comfortably inside whatever bar was quoted.
This work does not look like that.
Its first reading of gravity was badly out, and stood on the wall like that for weeks.
A fitter would have done better.
The neutron row failed at 7.24 sigma — found and published by the work itself.
Fitting has no mechanism for producing its own counter-evidence.
So look for the misses. If there are none, worry.

Writing a prediction down after you have seen the answer is not a prediction.
Anyone can be right afterwards.
A prediction has to be written down first.
Written down and time-stamped, before the measurement that tests it.
So that nobody — including its author — can quietly change it later.
Here the freeze is a public file, and the commit is the clock.
Every number is regenerated by a script. Nothing is quoted from memory.

Nine numbers are on the wall. Two of them are dead, and they are still on the wall.

One axiom. One measured number.
Nine numbers on the wall. Seven land inside the measurement’s own bar.
Two are corpses, and they are on the same board.
A board with only the winners on it would be worth nothing.

They ran the search a sceptic would run — against themselves.
Hunt for a formula that hits one number and you will find one.
So the work went hunting — against itself.
Every formula of the same size, aimed at the proton’s weight.
Two thousand nine hundred and seventy-one land at least as close.
Fifteen of them reach the measurement’s own eleven digits.
Every single one is a dead end.
Not one has an integer inside it to carry to a second measurement.

You could end this whole thing this afternoon, and they tell you exactly how.
Say you think this is nonsense. Good.
Here is how to end it.
Show a fifth condition a record needs. Or that one of the four comes from the others.
Show a seventh way to read the grain.
Show that the writing has to couple to time as well.
Any one of those, and the number moves, and the physics goes with it.
Pick the kind of test you can actually run.
Experiment. Argument. Or an identification you can show is wrong.
If you find the thing a switch names, the claim is over.
That is the point of publishing them.
