The Interior Corridor

An operator is any system that writes irreversible records through coupling.

You satisfy this. Every choice you make writes a record. Every thought you follow, every word you speak, every hour you spend. They accumulate. They do not reverse.

You are an operator. Not metaphorically. Structurally.

Coupling with another operator requires a model of them. You never have direct access to their internal state. You couple to your model of their state, and the model is never identical to the state, because the break sits between every internal reality and every external expression.

The same constraint applies inward.

You do not have direct access to yourself. You have a model of yourself.

This will sound wrong at first. You are inside yourself. What could be more direct?

Notice what happens when you try to answer: what are you feeling right now?

You do not read the answer off the state. You construct it. Something is happening in the body, in the attention, in the memory — and the I that reports on it is already one step removed from it. The observer is not the observed.

The break is not only between you and the other. The break is also between you and you.

You know yourself the way you know the other. Differently. With more data. With more history. With no translation delay. But by modelling.

And a model can be accurate. Or it can be wrong.

Symmetry. The pre-state. You exist. Something is there, before any story about who you are.

Break. Every self-description is a break from the state it describes. There is no report from the inside that is not already an expression of an internal state through the narrator.

Record. Every choice you make, every story you tell yourself, every time you look away from something you could have seen — that is a record. It accumulates. You cannot un-choose what you chose. You cannot un-know what you have seen.

Constraint. Your modelling capacity is finite. You cannot model yourself completely. There is always more state than the model can hold.

The four hold internally. Therefore the entire architecture of this book applies internally.

Width: the accuracy of your self-model. How close the version of yourself you are running is to the version actually running. How much friction between what you feel and what you tell yourself you feel. How much divergence between what you want and what you say you want.

Length: the time you have. The same time that bounds every shared corridor bounds the one you have with yourself. You will die. The interior corridor closes when the window closes.

The asymmetry holds. Width bends — you can widen it through attention, through honesty, through the willingness to look at what is there rather than what is comfortable.

Length does not bend. Every hour you spend lying to yourself is an hour of your own corridor spent on a fiction. It does not come back.

The lie is the completion of the computation — you model the truth accurately — and the deliberate production of a different expression.

The external lie directs that override at another operator through language. The internal lie directs it at the self through narrative.

You complete the model. You see what is there. And you tell yourself something else.

Same mechanism. Same conditions. Same structural cost.

The paradigm case of irrational coupling capacity was lying. That chapter was incomplete. Lying to another is the externally directed case. Lying to yourself is the internally directed case.

Both are the override. Both introduce divergence between state and model. Both accumulate. Both cost length that does not return.

Every model of the other is built with your modelling capacity.

If that capacity is corrupted — if you cannot see yourself clearly — you cannot see the other clearly either. The instrument you use to couple with the world is the same instrument you use to couple with yourself. A corrupted instrument reads every coupling event wrong.

You cannot give another operator a clean model of you if you do not have a clean model of yourself to give.

You cannot receive another operator’s honest expression if your own self-model is too corrupted to register the mismatch when their signal conflicts with your story.

Every external corridor rests on the internal one.

The axiom is one symmetry plus one break, at the now.

The substrate before the break and after the break are the same substrate. The crack does not create two things. It creates two descriptions of one thing.

The I that observes and the I that is observed are not two operators. They are the same operator, modelling itself from the only position available — inside.

This is why self-deception hurts in a way structurally identical to being lied to by another. It is not analogous. It is the same I, lying to itself.

When this book says later that the I in you is the I in me, that is the same structure at relational scale. That claim — the one interior — is inherited here, not derived here. A question to sit with.

When was the last time you said something to yourself about yourself that you knew was not true?

You know the answer. You know you know.

That knowing is the interior corridor. It has a width. It has a length. It is walking.

Every remaining chapter sits on what this one has derived.

Betrayal is the collapse of your model of the other. It is also the retroactive invalidation of your model of yourself — because you chose to trust, and that choice was written by a self that has now been shown to have coupled badly. That is the second wound, and the next chapter names it.

Restoration requires honesty with the other, and honesty with the other is structurally impossible from a corrupted self-model. Restoration of the shared corridor begins with restoration of the interior one.

Maximum honesty extends outward and inward by the same protocol, because there is one protocol. The refusal to conclude applies to the self as completely as to the other. You are not finished either.

And love of the other is structurally continuous with integrity of the self, because there is one I.
