Chapter Two
Music is direct coupling of one operator’s interior state to another’s through patterned vibration.
A child hums a tune without knowing why the melody is the melody.
A three-note phrase you have never heard resolves, and the resolution feels inevitable. A drum begins, and a moment later the body is moving without any decision to move.
The tradition called this music and could say everything about it except why it moves.
This is the second projection. Music is direct coupling of one operator’s interior state to another’s through patterned vibration. The arresting moment runs again, through the ear.
One new term enters here and runs through the book: rhythm.
The chapter does not produce a theory of music. It names no composers and no works. It is upstream of every technical apparatus any tradition has built.
A pressure wave arrives at the ear. The eardrum moves. The cochlea separates the wave into frequencies. Long before any thought arrives, something has happened to the listener.
A sense of rightness or strain arrives without argument. Where there is a pulse, the body finds it without deciding to. Where a tension resolves, the listener feels release. Where the tension is held, the listener carries it.
None of this requires interpretation. The architecture does not consult a theory before responding.
That is the data point.
Chapter One installed registration at the eye. A coupling architecture does not have one channel. Light through one. Sound through another. Pressure, chemistry, internal state through others. Each has its own resolution, its own noise floor, its own conditioning.
The operation is the same at each. A structure with non-arbitrary relations between its parts, met by an architecture configured to read them, registers as a feature of the coupling itself.
Music is the auditory case. Coherence reads coherence. The channel happens to be ears.
Three parts carry the claim.
Direct. No interpretive layer sits between the structure and the architecture. The wave reaches the ear. The channel reads it. The reading alters the architecture’s state. No proposition has been formed. Learning conditions which patterns the architecture reads fluently — a trained listener hears a cadence as inevitable. Learning does not become the coupling. The directness survives it.
Coupling. Two structures meet at a site where each is configured to read the other. Music is not a thing that is sent. Music is what happens when patterned vibration meets an architecture that can read it.
Patterned vibration. Frequency, amplitude and timing carrying non-arbitrary relations. Unpatterned pressure does not couple. There is nothing to read. But noise becomes musical where it is organised, repeated, or placed inside a trajectory the architecture can follow. Tonality is one site where patterning appears. Not the only one.
The chord landing is the same operation as the face arresting. The channel is acoustic. The operation is structural.
Two and a half thousand years ago it was noticed that strings divided in simple integer ratios produced sounds that coupled cleanly. Two to one — the same note at another register. Three to two. Four to three. The smaller the integers, the cleaner the coupling.
Two oscillators at a small-integer ratio align with a short repetition cycle. At a complex ratio they align across long cycles, with beating the ear reads as unresolved. A short cycle reads as one sound. A long one as two sounds in tension.
Harmonic ratios are low-entropy phase relationships. The ear is configured to read phase coherence between simultaneous tones.
The nineteenth century found the physical mechanism — resonances at integer multiples of the fundamental, aligning or beating. The corpus does not import the physics as the explanation. The acoustic match is a consequence to note, not an input to use.
Across every musical tradition the corpus can reach, one feature appears without exception. Temporal organisation the architecture can track.
Music with no melody carries it. Music with no harmony carries it. The infant responds to it before responding to melody.
Rhythm is what repeated, sustained or otherwise structured coupling events produce in time. Pulse and metre are one form. Phrase, breath, silence, recurrence are others. Rhythm does not mean only beat. It means structured time at the ear, however organised.
When two oscillators couple stably, what emerges is a temporal pattern. Periodic alignment. A drum strikes. The architecture entrains. A second strike at a regular interval. The lock holds. The body moves with it because the body is a coupled oscillator joining the structure.
Unmetered chant, free recitative, drone, slowly shifting texture — no regular pulse, but temporal structure the architecture entrains to at a coarser grain. Absence of beat is not absence of rhythm. Absence of any trackable time would be.
Melody needs intervals a tradition has organised. Harmony needs simultaneous tones a tradition has theorised. Rhythm needs only coupling events in time that carry non-arbitrary relation. Every tradition has it because every tradition is the same auditory architecture meeting patterned vibration.
Consonance is low-entropy phase coupling. Dissonance is high-entropy phase coupling. Both are structural quantities at the joint.
Music is structured passage through, or sustained presence within, that space. A piece may set up stability, introduce strain, and resolve it — the classical arc. It may sustain a low-entropy field for an hour without leaving it — drone. It may hold a strain that never resolves, with the held strain as the trajectory. It may organise through density, timbre, dynamics or register rather than harmonic motion.
The requirement is not classical resolution. It is that the architecture can track a trajectory, sustain within a field, or hold within a strain. A piece with none of these is noise the architecture cannot integrate.
Traditions organise the space differently. The operation is the same in each.
In the nineteenth century one philosopher reached for this. Music does not represent feelings. It produces them, below the level at which language acts, without the listener understanding what is being produced.
His tradition carried two commitments. Music acts directly, without representation. And music has a metaphysical privilege among the arts, because what it articulates is the substrate of the world itself.
The structure keeps the first and refuses the second.
Music couples directly. The architecture is altered before any proposition forms. That is the directness he was tracking.
What is refused is the privilege. Every channel couples directly. Sight reads coherent structure. Touch reads patterned pressure. None needs propositional translation.
Registration runs at the coupling event. Propositional understanding runs at a layer built on top. Knowing the piece, its tradition, what the maker was reaching for — these are real, and they sit above the registration and can amplify or redirect it. They are not it.
Musicology, history, cultural study are proposition built on registration. The structure converges with the older tradition on directness, with the propositional traditions on the layered work above, and refuses the false choice.
One ratio is privileged across every tradition. Two to one.
Every cycle of the lower frequency holds exactly two of the higher. The joint waveform repeats without remainder. The ear reads the same note at a different register.
Structurally privileged everywhere. Not culturally identical everywhere. Some traditions theorise octave equivalence. Some do not. Some divide the octave into seven, some five, some many more.
The relativist says: different traditions, no universal music, Western theory imported. The answer: no universal scales, modes or preferences are claimed. Only that two to one is privileged wherever harmonic coupling occurs, because it is the lowest-complexity relationship coupling admits. Organising around it or away from it is a choice made inside a space the operation defines. The intervals that appear most often across the widest range of traditions are two to one, three to two, four to three.
Sound a tone. Add a second at three to two. They align cleanly. Stable.
Add a third at five to four. The three register as one chord, not three tones.
Hold it. Move to a triad built on the fifth. Higher-complexity coupling against the first. Tension.
Return. Resolution. The phrase has run tonic, departure, return, marked at every site by small-integer ratios.
Add a drum on every beat. The body entrains before deciding to. Phase coupling, trajectory, rhythm, running together. The arresting moment is what the listener registers when the phrase resolves.
The notation is the formalism. What the listener registers is the experience. The reading is what produces both, and replaces neither.
Cognitive musicology, embodied cognition, predictive coding, evolutionary musicology, music-as-emotion, ethnomusicology. The structure converges with each where it tracks registration and diverges on what produces it. It places the coherence in the vibration, not only in the model. It is silent on evolutionary origin. It reads affect as one layer. It keeps the invariance of the operation.
The producer chooses this contour. The improviser this turn. The performer this tempo. The listener this strand to follow. Each is override at a coupling site — Ø Resolutions Eight and a Half. A score is one record of those overrides. An improvisation, a recording, a live performance are others.
Music is not deterministic acoustic processing. It is the structured passage of overrides through producer, performer and listener, with the wave carrying the trace of every one.
The producer’s architecture moves through the substrate. The pressure wave is the wake — what the moving was, written into the air. The wake propagates. The listener meets it later, elsewhere, and reads it.
A recording holds the wake in a substrate that keeps it longer than air. The operation is unchanged. The ocean carries them all.
Why specific listeners register specific music — music cognition, development, cultural musicology. The technical formalisms at their own level. Non-human response to patterned vibration — birdsong, whale song, the responses of some mammals — where the structure predicts registration and the record is mixed and active.
Five claims carry this chapter.
HOR-2.1Show consonance judgements across diverse traditions that systematically invert the small-integer prediction — complex ratios read as cleaner than simple ones, across architectures — and the account is incomplete. Variation in which ratios beyond two to one a tradition foregrounds does not fire it.
HOR-2.2Exhibit something recognised as music across architectures with no trackable structure at all, and the trajectory-space account fails. No trajectory, no sustainable field, no held strain, no recurrence, no density shift, no return. It fires on absence of any trackable structure, not on absence of classical resolution.
HOR-2.3Show non-human auditory architectures responding to patterned vibration by an operation other than registration, and the projection fails.
HOR-2.4Exhibit a tradition in which some ratio other than two to one is structurally the lowest-complexity coupling available to the ear, and the privilege claim fails. Absence of octave equivalence in a tradition’s theory does not fire it.
HOR-2.5Re-describe direct coupling, without remainder, as one existing music-cognition theory adding no precision, and this is relabelling.
Every switch above is filed, with its status, in the registry. The registry writes them KS-HOR2.1 to KS-HOR2.5. What a kill switch is: Where It Would Die, on the wall.
The tradition could say everything about music except why it moves. Music moves because music is direct coupling through patterned vibration. No extra step. No hidden mechanism. No special ingredient. The architecture has met the structure. The structure has registered. The architecture has been changed.
Listen to something that has moved you. What is arriving at your ear is patterned vibration carrying the wake of someone’s coupling. The patterns lock at small-integer ratios. The trajectory carries you, or holds you, or strains you. The rhythm enters the body before any decision to let it in.
This is the axiom running, at the scale of music.
