Lovelock’s theorem and the gravitational-physics literature.

Lovelock’s theorem and the gravitational-physics literature. References are restricted to the external mathematical and physical results that AP08 invokes directly: Lovelock 1971 and 1972 (the uniqueness theorems), Hawking 1975 (the strong-field consistency check), and a small set of formative results on the Schwarzschild solution and horizon junction conditions.

Lovelock, D. (1971). The Einstein tensor and its generalizations. Journal of Mathematical Physics 12, 498–501. The general N-dimensional uniqueness theorem for divergence-free symmetric rank-2 tensors built from the metric and its first and second derivatives. The theorem invoked at section 8.2; the load-bearing external claim tracked by KS-I.2.

Lovelock, D. (1972). The four-dimensionality of space and the Einstein tensor. Journal of Mathematical Physics 13, 874–876. The special uniqueness result in 3+1 dimensions: the divergence-free symmetric rank-2 tensor in four spacetime dimensions takes the form a·G_μν + b·g_μν, with no additional higher-order terms admissible. With AP10’s closure of N = 3, this is the form invoked at equation (8.1).

Hawking, S. W. (1975). Particle creation by black holes. Communications in Mathematical Physics 43, 199–220. The original derivation of Hawking radiation and the Hawking temperature. The strong-field consistency check at section 6.2 builds on this result; AP08’s derivation arrives at the same temperature via the condensate picture plus AP06 Theorem 3.1.

Schwarzschild, K. (1916). Über das Gravitationsfeld eines Massenpunktes nach der Einsteinschen Theorie. Sitzungsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 189–196. The original spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein field equations. Underlies the surface-gravity formula at equation (6.1).
