In Plain Words

In the author’s prose voice.

In the author’s prose voice.

I have been thinking in an hourglass for years. The top is everything that could happen. The bottom is everything that has. The sand is not sand. Each grain is the smallest thing there is that can hold on to another. The electron. Before anything happened the two halves faced each other in perfect balance. Nothing moved. Then the smallest possible splinter broke off. The glass tipped. The first grain fell through the neck. From that moment there was a direction. Then a history. Then time, which is only the count of grains that have fallen.

The neck is gravity. It is not one of the ways a grain can couple to the world. It is the ring every grain has to pass through to become real at all. Every one of the twenty-one gates a grain has to pass — the twenty-one ways it couples — has to be passed there. Together. Now. That is why the strength of gravity is the strength of one coupling multiplied by itself twenty-one times. Not because twenty-one is a pretty number. Because a grain cannot become real through some of its gates and not the others. It passes all of them or none. And each gate is a whole handshake between two grains, a writer and a reader. So each is worth one whole exchange, not half of one.

There is always exactly one grain in the neck that has not yet coupled. There has to be. If the last grain landed and everything balanced, nothing could be written or read. The universe would stop. That one grain adds its share to the twenty-one balanced ways. One grain over the size of the opening. And the opening is not a hole the grain falls through. It is the grain’s own aperture. The grain is the constraint. The observer, the observing and the observed are one grain. So the opening is one grain from its centre to its rim, by identity. One grain over a disc of that size is one over π.

The universe also had to hold the break open in the first place. Otherwise it would have healed. Holding costs. The cost of holding is paid in the currency of holding. That is coupling. That is α. Not because α was picked off a list. Because that is what a holding is measured in. The proton’s holders in AP49 were already measured in it. And a hold leaks. The leak has to be held. That holding leaks. Add it up and you get a division, not a subtraction. Which way the division runs depends only on whether the leak is charged against what the thing holds, or added to what it resists with.

And the table in §2 is not the argument. It is an elimination. A petrol engine runs on petrol. You can pour in water, diesel, oil or Coke if you like. Test as many as you want. The car starts on one of them. That is all the table does. It says what cannot work. What says why the grain’s own disc is the right one is the identity, and the identity came first.

That is the whole paper. It moves no number. It says why the numbers AP28 and AP44 already had are the shape they are. It says which of those reasons the picture forces and which I rule. And it owes nothing it does not name.
