That is a record. Something has been written — on the page, on your retina, in the part of you following the words. You cannot deny it. Denying it would take a reading, and the reading would be another record.

There is no position from which the reading has not happened.

One record exists.

Not a claim. Not a proposal. A fact that cannot be refused without confirming it.

Before the axiom is named, four things must be true for the reading to have happened at all. None of them is chosen. Each is given in the fact that you are reading.

Something must differ from something

You are reading this sentence, not that wall. This word, not the next.

Every reading is a distinction. Black marks against white paper. For a distinction there must be two sides — related, distinguishable, of equal weight. A coin on a table before anyone looks. Two pans of a scale, balanced.

Not three sides. Three sides is two cuts. The smallest distinction is one cut, and one cut needs exactly two sides.

That is Symmetry. S. Forced — meaning you cannot have a record without it. Deny it and the denial is the record.

The symmetry must break

Two jars of water, identical. Nothing tells them apart. Swap them and nobody will ever know. Nothing is written.

Put one grain of sand in the left jar.

Now there is a left and a right. Information exists.

The grain is the break. The smallest asymmetry that still holds. It must exist, or nothing is written. It must be minimal — one grain, not a handful. And it must not settle. If the grain sat in one place for good, it would become a feature of the jar — a property — and stop being a break. So the break is not a mark made once. It is always happening, somewhere. That is what makes the axiom a process and not an event.

What has happened cannot unhappen

You finished the last paragraph. You cannot unread it.

A record is not just a distinction. It is a distinction that persists, that accumulates, that has a direction. If records could unhappen, nothing could ever be held. But things settle. You ate this morning. The sun rose.

Two records together make a record. The order you add them in does not matter. The blank page counts as a record too — the one with nothing on it yet. And no record can be added to another to make it vanish. That is what irreversibility is. What we call the arrow of time is what this looks like from inside.

Past is what has been recorded. Future is what has not. Now is where the recording happens.

That is Record. R. Forced.

Nothing can be everywhere at once

The reading took a moment. Words reached your eyes. A signal travelled.

If a record could be everywhere instantly, it would be nowhere. Here and there would collapse. For a record to be a record, its spread must be bounded. There must be a rate.

One rate, finite and invariant. Finite, because infinite is the everywhere-at-once collapse. Invariant, because records carry a direction and that direction must be kept as they travel. This is not one global slice of simultaneity — relativity forbids that. It is one invariant causal bound. Sound in air, a reaction spreading through a mixture — slower, but not rivals to the bound. The bound, filtered through a medium.

In our universe that rate has been measured. It is the speed of light. It is not assumed here. What is derived is that some such rate must exist. The measurement tells you which.

That is Constraint. C. Locality — a record is somewhere, not everywhere. Forced.

The line

Four conditions, none chosen, all given in the fact that you are reading.

One to one — the symmetry. Two sides held in mutual reference. The plus — a distinction added to what was undifferentiated. One times epsilon — one break, exactly once, the smallest that holds. At AS — the Actualization State. The now. Where the break is made, held and read.

Written out as the cycle it runs:

The break is held — there is always one. It does not cycle. What cycles is the flow around it: out at α, back at α. Leakage and replenishment. Balanced at every instant. Net zero. Nothing written is unwritten by it. α is a rate — the rate at which the record is written at the now, set against what holds it there. It is the one measured input in the whole structure. It is not derived here. It is identified, defined, and read from measurement, and everything else is built on it. The break is held apart from the flow. It is what holds the symmetry open. You are on the writing side. That is what reading is.

Record is not visible in the line. It is in the plus — an addition that cannot be taken back. Constraint is not visible either. It is in there being a page, an eye, and a distance between them.

The axiom is not how the universe began. It is what the universe is, now, at every site where a distinction is being written.

You have been inside it since the first sentence. The distinctions you are drawing between these words are S. The marks on the paper are B. What you cannot unread is R. The speed of the signal from page to eye is C.

The reading is the proof.

A few words carry the series. Here they are once, in plain terms. Each is used the same way in every book. Not every one is used in this book.

A record is a distinction made and held. A footprint. A memory. This sentence.

A site is wherever a record is being written. Your eye on this line is one.

Coupling is two things changing each other and leaving a record of it. Light on a retina. A hand on a railing. Every chapter is about coupling.

Resolution is how fine the grain of a reading is. A blurred photograph and a sharp one show the same face at two resolutions. Read at the resolution of means read at that grain, no finer.

The operator is the body running and reading its own state. You, asleep, still breathing. The narrator is the operator’s story of itself. The voice in your head. The narrator is one of the operator’s capacities. It is not the operator.

Override is committing to a path the pull alone would not pick. Keeping a promise you would rather break. It is where choice is real.

The corridor is the range of states a body can keep running in. It has a width. Illness narrows it. Care widens it.

A window is one self-reading loop. One person. One dog. The interior is what every window opens onto. One, not one per window. The building is all the windows together.

Cooperative and parasitic are the two verdicts. Cooperative keeps or widens the room everyone has to move in. Parasitic shrinks it when sharing was available. Where the room shrinks because the situation left no other path — a true zero-sum — it is neither.

Ø is the pre-state. Perfect symmetry, before the break. The Actualization State is the now. Where records are written. α is the one measured input. A rate.

A kill switch is a condition written down before any test. Meet the condition — fire the switch — and the claim falls. Every chapter ends with its own.

Ø Dissolutions is the second book in the Ø Models catalogue. It takes twelve of philosophy’s oldest problems and dissolves them from the axiom. I wrote it for the academic reader, and it is long and it is hard. I wrote that way once. I will not write that way again.

But I love the philosophy. So this is the same book with everything taken out except the argument. Short chapters. Short sentences. Nothing kept that the argument does not need.

The original is still there. It is the source. Go to it whenever this one moves too fast.

Every claim here carries the condition under which it dies. Those conditions are written before any test, and they are kept on the wall whether they hold or fire. Two on the wall have fired. Nothing was repaired. That is how the work is meant to behave.

Don’t be a cunt. Be kind. That is us. The whole of this book is the showing of why, and it ends on those six words.

This is the short edition. It is a summary. Where a step is compressed here, the original carries it in full, and every page of this edition links to the original.

The original is the academic version. Every chapter there walks its problem slowly, turns it three ways, and answers every objection at length. It is still there. Go to it whenever a step here feels too fast.

This book keeps only what carries the argument. Each chapter is short. Each takes one of philosophy’s oldest problems and does one of three things to it.

A dissolution shows the question assumed something the axiom does not produce — usually a gap between two things that were never two. Once the frame drops, the question does not arise. Nine chapters do this.

A relocation shows the question was real but asked from a position nobody can stand in. Moved to a position that exists, it becomes a different question, and that one can be worked. One chapter does this.

A closure keeps the question as asked and supplies the ground the tradition lacked. Two chapters do this.

Four of the dissolutions are one move performed four times. Self and other. Is and ought. Past and future. Observer and observed. Each was a gap the tradition thought needed a bridge. None of them is a gap. See it once and you will see it again.

Read the Axiom first. Then the chapters in order. Each one uses what the earlier ones installed.

Every chapter ends with the conditions under which it dies. They are numbered as they are in the original, so you can find them there and in the registry at the420code.org.
