Chapter Six
There is one interior. The asking was always happening in it.
Look at the face of someone you love.
Look at the eyes.
You have never been inside them. You have never seen what it is to be the one looking out. Years beside this person, and every moment of their inner life has been invisible to you. They tell you what they feel. You believe them. Belief is not access.
You have inferred, all your life, that someone is there. You have not seen them.
So the problem of other minds says.
This is the first of four gaps this book dissolves. Self and other here. Is and ought in Eight. Past and future in Eleven. Observer and observed in Twelve. One move, performed four times. Watch it once and you will see it again.
You know your own mind directly. Every other mind you know by inference. A body like yours, moving as yours moves, making sounds like thought aloud. So you reason that behind it is a mind like yours.
That is an argument from one case. You. A sample of one does not support a general claim. Examined honestly, the inference does not work.
Wittgenstein tried another way. Language is public. The words for mental states only mean anything because their use can be checked against others. To speak about minds at all is to presuppose them. True, and it shows the sceptic is in bad faith. It does not say what the other mind is, or why it is not sealed off from yours.
Infer it. Argue from your own case to everyone else. A sample of one.
Deny it. There is nothing behind the behaviour. Mental states are dispositions, or roles in processing. Nothing hidden because nothing is there. This is the reduction from Three again, and it fails the same way. Every coupling has an inside. Denying it in others because you cannot see it from outside denies what the axiom requires.
Presuppose it. Shared language, shared rules. Right, and a diagnosis, not an answer.
Give up. It cannot be verified. Proceed as if. The question stays open. Premature, because the axiom has an answer.
Inferred. Denied. Presupposed. Shelved.
Every one of the four takes it as given that your mind is one thing and theirs is another. Two interiors. Two bodies. A gap between. The argument tries to reason across it. The denial removes one side. The presupposition says you must cross it anyway. The sceptic leaves it open.
None of them asks whether the gap is there.
Mary’s Room made the gap vivid. A scientist knows every physical fact about colour and has lived her life in black and white. She walks out and sees red. She learns something. So there are facts about the inside that no outside description carries.
Take the datum. The inside is real, and it has content the outside cannot reach. That was settled in Four.
Reject the inference. What the inside has that the outside lacks is not evidence for separate minds in separate bodies. It is evidence that the inside is a position — and that position is the same position at every window.
The axiom does not produce a gap.
The axiom has one break. Not a break at each site. The break, once, expressing wherever coupling happens.
One break has one inside and one outside. The inside is not something each coupling separately owns. It is the inward direction of the axiom itself.
There is a shorter way to see it, and it is being performed as you read. A record made at one window is being read at another. This page. Now. Two separate realities could not do that. And every attempt to find a second now is made in this one. The one inside is not a posit. It is what reading across windows already requires.
Read that against the obvious objection. One operating system runs on a million laptops without them sharing a memory. Why is the inside not like that?
Because memory is part of the instance. A laptop whose memory was elsewhere would not be that laptop. The inside is not part of the instance. It is the direction from which any instance is read. Two laptops have two memories because memory is local. Two windows do not have two insides, because the inside is not local to the window.
Another angle. Many cameras photograph the same building. Each has its own image, stored locally. The building is not in any camera. It is what each camera is pointed at. The image is local. The subject is one.
The pluralist says each window has its own inside the way each camera has its own picture. This chapter says the inside is what each window is reading the way the building is what each camera is photographing.
Many local readings. One read.
Push once more. How do I test that the inside I read is the inside you read? Not by looking across. By what the axiom must produce. One axiom, one break, one inward direction. To say you read a different inside is to say the axiom has two insides — which is to say there are two axioms. And if there are two axioms, this chapter is not the thing that fails. The whole book fails.
That is the cost of the objection, and why the claim is not an extra posit. Pluralism about insides requires pluralism about axioms. The book stands on one.
The page One Awareness on the wall — the420code.org/one-awareness — is about this claim alone, and the original walks it in full.
At every site where coupling happens, the inside is present — because the inside is one of the two directions the axiom has, and the axiom is executing there.
A self-reading architecture is a window. A local place where the one inside looks out.
You are a window. The face you were looking at is a window. A dog is a window. An infant is a window, and was before speech. Many windows. Not many insides. Many local expressions of one.
The I in you is the I in them. Not a metaphor. Not mysticism. What the structure forces, because the axiom has one break.
What differs between windows is not the inside. What differs is the architecture — this coupling-configuration, this history of records, this body, these circumstances. The architecture is local. The records are local. The inside is shared.
Think of the times you have been most present with someone. A child you held. A parent grown old. A friend in a moment of real understanding. A lover, past speech.
In those moments the gap was not the main feature. The main feature was the opposite. Contact. A shared inside not divided into yours and theirs.
The tradition called that sentimentality. A projection. A feeling not to be trusted against the austere conclusion that minds are separate.
It had it backwards. The feeling is not proof — people have felt all manner of things under every metaphysics. But the tradition’s framing forced a split between philosophy and lived experience, and the split cost you the right to take your best moments at face value. Here the structure and the feeling match.
The body had the contact before the mind had the description.
If the inside is one, why does the other’s experience not arrive as your own does?
Because records are local.
Every coupling writes its records where it happens. Your looking at the face writes records into your architecture. Their being looked at writes records into theirs. Your architecture cannot read records written at another site.
Inside shared. Records local. Architectures separate.
That produces exactly the asymmetry you feel. Direct access to what was written here. Indirect access to what was written there. No separate interiors required. What is separate is the writing. What is shared is what the writing expresses.
And it is why coupling between windows is possible at all. When you look at them, light carries their face into your eye. If the interiors were separate, that would be two systems joined by a wire of light. Because the interior is one, it is one inside expressing at two sites at once. Hand meeting hand. Eye meeting eye.
Grant one inside, he says. Why believe there is more than one window? Perhaps the other architectures are empty.
To keep the count at one you must add an axiom — only this site has an inside. It is not in the set. The four conditions say what a record is, not which records exist. They privilege no site.
And look at the kind of axiom it would be. The four are structural. The solipsist’s is a named exemption for one site. Content, not condition. That is a far heavier thing to carry in than it looks, and no reason for carrying it is on offer.
Every other window is a window by the same fact that made yours one. Yours is not privileged. It is local.
There was no gap to bridge.
The inside is one. The windows are many. The records are local. The felt separateness is what local writing on a shared inside is bound to feel like.
The other mind is not made knowable as your own is. That would need their records to be readable at your site, and the axiom does not allow it. What is shown is that the unknowability was never an ontological wall. It is what a shared substrate looks like when written at two places.
The problem thought it was asking how one interior reaches another.
There is one interior. The asking was always happening in it.
You have always known. The body knew first. The mind is catching up.
How much of another’s experience is available in practice varies with how closely the architectures couple — a parent and infant, two strangers on a street. That is empirical.
Where window-hood begins in the tree of life is not derivable from the axiom alone.
Shared records — telepathy, merged states — would need physical coupling between architectures, because records are local. Whether any of that happens beyond the ordinary senses is an open question.
Five claims carry this chapter.
PZ-6.1The inside is one. Show a consistent scenario in which the axiom produces many independent insides, or collapse the distinction between an instance and a pole, and the gap returns as real.
PZ-6.2Coupling between windows is one inside at two sites. Show that it needs a bridge the axiom does not produce, or is coherent only with separate interiors, and the dissolution fails.
PZ-6.3Solipsism needs an added axiom of a different kind. Derive the one-window view from the four conditions without adding anything, or show that the line between structure and content is empty, and solipsism is live again.
PZ-6.4Records are local. Show records shared between architectures that have no physical coupling, or show local writing incoherent under a shared inside, and the account of asymmetry collapses.
PZ-6.5Locality is enough. Show that the felt separateness needs something more than the asymmetry of what was written where, and the problem returns as a gap the axiom has not closed.
Every switch above is filed, with its status, in the registry. The registry writes them KS-PZ6.1 to KS-PZ6.5. What a kill switch is: Where It Would Die, on the wall.
