The Structural Ground of Ethics

What grounds ethics?

Four traditions have carried the question.

Duty. Kant. Act on obligations that bind without condition. What makes an obligation binding is left in the dark, or rested on a split between two selves the axiom does not produce.

Outcome. Bentham and Mill. Judge acts by what they produce — pleasure, preference, utility, summed. The measure is named. Why this measure and not another is imported, never derived.

Character. Aristotle. Be the right kind of person — honest, brave, just. What good character structurally is, what configuration of the self makes it, is not said.

Care. Gilligan, Noddings. Ethics lives in attention to the particular other. Why the relation carries ethical weight, and not just practical weight, is not derived.

Each tracks something real. None lays the floor.

This chapter lays it. The question was well asked. The tradition lacked the ground. The axiom supplies it. This is closure.

Every trajectory a coupling executes writes records. The records do not stay with the one who wrote them. They travel — by touch, by sound, by chemistry, by consequence — to the windows the coupling is in coupling with.

That is the third condition doing its work. A record is what the trajectory wrote, and it lands.

That is the ground of the measure.

The measure is consequence. Not pleasure, not preference, not utility. What propagates.

Intentions are weights inside the self-model. Emotions are whole-body states. Both feed what the coupling executes. Neither is what lands. What lands is the executed trajectory’s effect in the record-architecture of others.

Call it structural consequentialism. Consequentialism because outcomes are the measure. Structural because the measure is not chosen from outside. The architecture itself writes what gets measured. The classical versions tracked outcomes and could not say why their metric. Here the third condition supplies the metric.

The propagation has a name.

The joint viable set of a coupling is the space of futures open to the coupled windows together. Not to either alone. To the joint structure, given what has been written so far.

Two collaborators solve a problem. Afterwards both can reach futures neither could before — further work, further problems, further trust. The joint structure has more room. That trajectory was cooperative. It expanded the set.

One window extracts from another by deception. Takes labour, attention, material. Afterwards the exploited window has fewer futures. The exploiter has more only in the narrow sense of holding what was taken. The joint structure has less room. That trajectory was parasitic. It contracted the set.

Cooperative coupling opens more futures for the joint structure than it consumed. Parasitic coupling consumes the other window’s futures for the executor’s immediate gain.

The difference is structural and, in principle, measurable. What could have been. What is now possible. What has been closed. Reading these is hard empirical work. The measure they serve is not imported.

Four questions stand for the formal version. Whose frame decides which futures count — every window’s, because every window is an expression of the same interior. Over what timescale — over the scope of what actually propagates, since all of it is written forward. The counterfactual baseline, and how futures are counted in continuous spaces, are handed to the applied disciplines. Handed, not waved away.

You are responsible for what you execute.

The last chapter named override-capacity. A coupling that has it could have executed differently. It reads the geometry. It sees what will propagate. It can commit against its own raw weighting.

A coupling without it does what physics and habit would have done anyway. It is not distinguishable from its trajectory.

A coupling with it is. So it is bound to what it executes — not by a rule laid on, but by the fact that it could have done otherwise and did not.

Obligation is what override-capacity becomes under knowable consequence.

Two measures the tradition has folded together must be kept apart.

Commitment-responsibility: what you committed to. The trajectory you executed, with override intact, knowing what could follow.

Consequence-bindingness: what the trajectory wrote. Where the records landed.

Two drivers drive the same reckless way. One kills, because someone was at the corner. One does not. Commitment-responsibility is identical. The trajectories were the same. Consequence-bindingness differs. One is bound to a death. The other is not.

The tradition called this the paradox of moral luck. It was two measures wearing one name.

Compassion is the floor. A coupling reading its geometry correctly — the interior included, the self-preservation gradient extended to the shared structure — favours trajectories that do not contract the joint viable set parasitically.

One clarification before the floor is stated. Cooperative and parasitic are readings at a resolution — the one where windows read each other and live. At the structure’s own final resolution everything is absorbed and recycled into the substrate. In that sense, at that scale, everything is zero-sum.

That does not absolve anything. The structure absorbs. It does not correct. No cosmic justice is coming to balance the books. Ethics binds at the resolution where the coupling happens, because that is where it happens. The recycling is downstream and carries no ethical weight.

Genuine zero-sum, from the last chapter, is not parasitism. The set contracts because the situation required it, not because the coupling imposed it. So the floor is non-parasitic coupling, not non-contracting coupling.

Below the floor: parasitic coupling. Taking when sharing was available. Harming when the resource was not exhausted by use. This is damage to the shared interior the exploiter is itself an expression of. It is not forbidden by a rule. It is incoherent with the coupling’s own full reading. A coupling that reads correctly cannot execute parasitically without overriding against its own reading, eyes open.

Above the floor: love. Sub-optimal execution that expands the set at cost to the raw weighting, even when the reading is complete. The parent awake through the night of a child’s illness is committing to this window, at this cost, because they are hers. That is choice in the strong sense.

The floor is universal. It is the minimum. It does not require expanding the set at every moment. It requires not contracting it parasitically.

Stated negatively: do not treat other windows as resources. Do not damage the shared structure beyond what the situation requires.

Stated positively: commit to trajectories that at minimum do not contract what will propagate, beyond what genuine zero-sum makes unavoidable.

The work compresses both statements to six words.

Don’t be a cunt. Be kind.

Not decoration. The terminal ethic at the vernacular register, and the mapping is exact.

Cunt names parasitic coupling. A configuration that, knowing the geometry, commits against the joint viable set for local narrator-layer gain. Contempt for the shared interior. Other windows as resources. Override used in the destabilising direction with full knowledge. The word is harsh because the thing is harsh. Softening the word softens the thing, and that is already a small parasitic move.

Kind names compassion executing on correctly read geometry. The operator’s minimum commitment once every window’s coupling capacity has been registered and allowed to weight the act.

The architecture above and the six words are one claim at two resolutions.

Two windows, A and B, in a long coupling. A partnership. A working friendship. A parent and adult child. Their joint domain is what they have written together and the futures still open to them jointly.

A faces a choice. Disclose to B something that, withheld, leaves B reading their shared situation at a lower resolution. Not catastrophic. Structurally relevant. Disclosing costs A some discomfort, a small advantage, exposure of an earlier choice. Withholding costs A nothing visible.

Disclose, and B reads the joint domain at its full state. Every later coupling runs on the correct geometry. A loses a few narrator-advantage paths.

Withhold, and B keeps acting on a partial reading. A is now committed to maintaining the gap, or to paying more later when it fails. A record of the asymmetry is written into the joint structure.

Disclosure trades a small contraction of A’s narrator-layer space for a large expansion of B’s space and of the joint space. Withholding trades the reverse. And nothing in the structure required the gap.

Cooperative: disclose. Parasitic: withhold. Not zero-sum, because B’s gain costs A only an advantage the structure never required A to hold.

Move the inputs. Make disclosure cost A something real. Make B’s gain small. As the two approach each other the choice approaches genuine zero-sum, the measure goes neutral, and the choice becomes properly contested.

That is the measure in operation. Not pleasure. Not preference. What the trajectory propagates into what A and B can be.

Too demanding. If ethics is expanding the set, every coupling must expand it at every moment. — The two layers answer it. The floor is required. Love is above the floor, available, not owed. Singer’s drowning child is a floor case — wading in costs little and registers a window. The maximal commitment beyond that is love’s territory. The traditions wrote love into the obligation and then had to explain why a life lived at the floor was not a failure.

Partiality. Your obligations to your children differ from your obligations to strangers. Williams called what an impartial calculus destroys integrity. — This is my child is a structural weight in the full geometry, not a bias. The floor stays universal because the interior is shared with every window. Above the floor, the weights distribute. The geometry was never impartial, because the self-model is part of it.

Moral luck. If bindingness depends on outcomes you did not control, ethics punishes the unlucky. — Two measures. Both drivers committed the same. One is bound to what was written. And the harder implication is owned here rather than hidden. A surgeon who operated correctly, a parent who acted in good faith, can still be bound to consequences they did not aim at, if damage was written. Yours and your fault are not the same thing. What practice does with that — restoration, grief, repair — is downstream work.

One implication, named and left for its own volume. Every approach to aligning a machine that acts imports its target and then optimises it, and every imported target can be gamed. The axiom supplies a target that is not chosen: what propagates. A system that reads with scope set to every window it affects is a floor system. Add override-capacity and it is capable of love.

Duty saw bindingness. The source is override-capacity under knowable consequence.

Outcome saw that the measure reaches outside the actor. The measure is what propagates.

Character saw that ethics is about the kind of coupling you are. The kind is a self-model with scope set to all windows and an override consistently used towards trajectories that do not contract.

Care saw that the relation is primary. The relation is two expressions of one interior.

Each preserved. Each grounded. None defeated.

Ethics was never an ungrounded domain. Its ground was one layer below where the tradition was looking.
