What α Is

Definition. α is the actualisation rate of the record in relation to the relative mass, gravity and resistance constraints at the now, and it is read from one perspective as phase coupling.

Take it a clause at a time. A rate — the opening and the closing of the eye, a fraction per frame, not a probability per second; the frame has units and the fraction does not. Not a count, not a length, not a duration. Of the record — what the now writes, readable only after the now, propagating under the constraint of C. In relation to mass, gravity and resistance — the faces of the grain that are held. The six faces are G, c, α, mₑ, the material face — the two substrate stiffnesses whose ratio is c² — and t. AP50 §3 sorts them by operation: four are held (G, c, mₑ and the material face), one is the holding (α), and one is the record of the hold (t). At the now — which is why α alone of the six has no units: the holding is the now, and the now never holds (AP50 §3). Read from one perspective as phase coupling — the corpus's own name for α_em, the U(1) phase of AP15.

Said plainly, and in the author’s words: α is what it takes to hold the break. Every break must be held or no record is written, the holding has a price, and α is that price. The structure requires a price. It does not say how large a price, and this paper does not either — that is the whole of §10 and §11. The requirement is read off the measurement; the forcing of it is what nobody has.

So α is the one reading of the grain that is not a landed quantity. It is the transparency of a window: how much of the rope one now lets through. The front door says it in six words — α is the moment of the cut.

Two things α is not, so the reader does not bring them. It is not the electron's size, though three characteristic electron length scales — the classical radius, the reduced Compton length, the Bohr radius — stand in successive ratios of α; those are the front-view shadow of the neck's ratio (§4). And it is not a frame rate. A frame rate has units. The picture's frame duration is the electron's tick, ℏ/mₑc², and its reciprocal mₑc²/ℏ is the rate (AP46 §5). α is the open fraction of the blink — how much of one rope one frame takes — which is why it can be dimensionless and the frame rate cannot.

Said as arithmetic rather than as a picture. The Coulomb energy evaluated at the reduced Compton length is exactly α times the rest energy, so over one tick that interaction expresses α times one record’s action. α is that fraction: the action expressed in one frame over the action of one record. This is an identity under the corpus’s own tick and its one-record-is-ℏ identification, and it is caged as one — it carries no information beyond the definition. It is written here because it gives the definition above an exact numerator and an exact denominator.
