Artist’s Note
This is Artist’s Proof 29 of The 420 Code, a chapter of Notebook VII — The Operator Interface: Consciousness, Ethic, Reading. It places consciousness in the structure.
Actualisation is the fundamental state. Awareness is the stage at which coupling becomes possible — the coupling capacity the break creates, the first real opportunity to accept or reject coupling. It is not yet consciousness, not yet observation, not yet feeling: it is the selectivity an electron already has. Energy is that capacity expressed at the now: E ≡ κ(B)AS.
From there the paper runs the dependency chain — actualisation, awareness, observation, consciousness, self-consciousness — and shows that the hard problem of consciousness has been asked three floors above the foundation. Correcting the floor does not close the question. It relocates it to where it might be closeable. That is progress, not solution.

Orientation
Where this paper fits in the 420 Code
AP29 is Chapter 2 of Notebook VII, between the anchor (AP43, which installs the four-term reading system) and the operator (AP02). It supplies the structural ground AP01 assumes: agency is steering, steering requires orientation, and orientation is coupling capacity. It depends on AP28 (the G derivation and the 21:1 channel structure) for Step 4, and reads alongside AP01 (agency) and AP03 (c and G as conjugate readings of substrate stiffness).
How to read this paper
The body opens with Step 1 — awareness as the coupling capacity of the break — and runs through Step 7, then the Result, the Kill Switch Registry, and the Connections to The 420 Code. The voice alternates between the structural claim and the plain example: a dead body kicked, an electron coupling, a uranium nucleus split.
What this paper does and does not do
It establishes actualisation as fundamental, awareness as coupling capacity, energy as that capacity expressed, and relocates the hard problem. It does not solve the hard problem — the qualia question, why there is something it is like to be a conscious system, remains open (Step 7). It does not derive the value of α (≈ 1/137 remains the one measured input); Step 4 reads the 21:1 channel structure of AP28 and inherits AP28’s kill switch.

The kill switches
KS-AP29.1 — Actualisation as fundamental state / awareness as coupling capacity
LIVE. If a break can exist without creating coupling capacity, Step 1 fails.
KS-AP29.2 — Awareness as capacity of energy
LIVE. If energy can exist where there is no coupling capacity, Step 2 fails.
KS-AP29.3 — Big Bang as first actualisation event
LIVE. If the first break does not open maximal possibility space, Step 3 fails.
KS-AP29.4 — Dark matter proportionality
LIVE. If the 21:1 channel structure does not produce the observed proportions, Step 4 fails. Depends on AP28’s derivation.
KS-AP29.5a — Energy conservation and Noether derivation
LIVE. If total coupling capacity can increase or decrease rather than redistribute, Step 5 fails.
KS-AP29.5b — Structural realism
LIVE — STRUCTURAL/METAPHYSICAL (the 420 Code’s deepest standing premise; not empirically falsifiable). If the axioms are approximations rather than identities with the substrate, Step 5 loses its ground. Applies retroactively to every AP.
KS-AP29.6 — Dependency chain
LIVE. If any downstream category can exist without the prior one, the hierarchy collapses at that point.
KS-AP29.7 — Hard problem relocation
LIVE. If the classical framing is correctly posed given the actualisation architecture, the relocation fails.

The debts
0.4 Debts. The Noether time-translation debt is addressed in Step 5 as a structural argument (not formally closed): time-translation invariance is argued from B’s permanence, not assumed. The qualia question is named open (Step 7); it is not a debt this paper undertakes to close.
